When Did Sports Betting In Arizona Become Legal Online?

On April 12th, 2021, the state Senate passed the betting bill HB 2772, and both retail and online sports betting became legal in Arizona.

Arizona sports gambling has been live and legal since September 2021 when the first sportsbooks opened, and as of May 2023, there are 17 legal online sportsbooks in the Grand Canyon State. The process of creating legal online sports betting in Arizona was a little unique. Put simply, when it legalized sports betting, the Arizona Department of Gaming granted a legal sports betting license to 10 Arizona professional sports teams and their respective facilities plus 10 licensed tribal casinos.

These 20 licensed franchises and gambling operators are then entitled to open both brick-and-mortar retail betting on premises (typically at a sporting venue) and have two online "skins" or brands. The 20 licensed operators have then exercised this right by partnering with online sportsbooks with commercial brands, who are now operational in the state thanks to their partnership with the licensed operator. Sports betting in AZ is thriving through partnership.

Arizona Sports Betting Legislation Timeline

Here is a timeline of the path to legal sports gambling in Arizona.

  • Sept. 9, 2021 Legal sports betting launched officially in Arizona, with gamblers able to create accounts with sportsbooks that were operating legally thanks to 20 licenses distributed by the Arizona Department of Gaming.
  • April 15, 2021 AZ Governor Doug Ducey signs HB 2772, Arizona's sports betting bill, into law.
  • April 12, 2021 After a period of negotiation with tribal representatives and another period of debate in the state legislature, the proposed sports betting bill (HB 2772) legalizing the activity is passed by a vote of 23-6 in the state senate.
  • May 14, 2018 The United States Supreme Court overturned the existing Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which had kept sports betting strictly illegal nationwide.

AZ Sportsbooks: Which Are The Best Promotions And Offers Right Now?

Since sports betting Arizona was legalized, the state's sports betting market has been chock-full of new operators trying to get in on the action and secure a licensed partnership. With so many operators trying to get a slice of the Arizona online sports betting industry, virtually all sportsbooks in Arizona offer promotions and bonus offers to attract your business.

With a lot of high-value offers out there, new bettors should be sure to pay attention to what is being offered and take advantage of the best Arizona sportsbook promo codes. This next section will break down some of the main types of promotions and offers available with all the new sports betting sites in Arizona.

  • Risk-Free Bets

Risk-free bets are an extremely common kind of promotion, which are usually given as welcome bonuses, according to which your first bet can be made "risk free." What "risk free" actually means in this context is that if your first bet loses, the sportsbook will refund you the amount you lost in free bets up to a certain dollar value, usually in the neighborhood of $1,000. This can be a great way to make your first bet count, but bettors should be aware that this is a real money wager and often only applies to your first bet. Other terms and conditions apply.

  • Deposit Match

This welcome bonus states that when Arizona bettors make their first deposit at a participating sportsbook, the Arizona sportsbook will match it up to a certain limit (usually $500 to $1,000). That means if you deposit $100, your account will show that you have $200 available to bet. This historically applies only to your initial deposit.

  • Referral Bonuses

When a sportsbook offers a referral bonus, it means that you'll be able to earn a bonus – usually $50 – when your friends sign up with your sportsbook with a link or code that you send them. If you have a preferred sportsbook and a friend who wants to sign up, this can be a convenient way to earn bet credits.

  • Odds Boosts

An odds boost is a way AZ sportsbooks voluntarily reduce their cut to heighten appeal to customers. While every sportsbook tries to offer competitive odds, each line or point spread incorporates some "juice" or "vig" that essentially ensures that the sportsbook makes money either way. Boosted odds at Arizona sportsbooks, make the odds more favorable to the bettor (for example increasing a point spread from +5.5 to +8.5) to stand out from competitors. This often wipes out the sportsbook's vig.

  • Parlay Insurance

In parlay insurance, a sportsbook will offer "bet insurance" on your parlay bet. This means that if your multi-leg parlay loses by only one of its legs, you're refunded your initial stake. Parlay bet insurance usually only applies to parlay bets with four or more legs, and it can involve a minimum odds requirement, but if you like making parlays – especially ones that include a long shot or "sweetener" leg – parlay insurance promos can be a fun way to make them with a little more peace of mind.

Legal Sportsbook Apps in Arizona

For bettors who want to use the best Arizona betting apps, the good news is that almost every new legal AZ sportsbook will have an app on offer as well.

Provided you have a good internet connection and are within state lines, you should be able to access any features that you're used to in-browser, from the comfort of your mobile phone. This is a very easy way to bet, especially if you're trying to follow a game on the go.

Visit BetMGM.com for T&Cs. Must be 21+. AZ Only. New Customer Offer. All promotions are subject to qualification and eligibility requirements. Rewards issued as non-withdrawable bonus bets. Arizona Online Sports Betting: Which Sports Can I Bet on?

  • NFL

NFL betting in Arizona is as popular as it is in the rest of the United States, and it is no different when it comes to sports betting. During the 2021-22 season, more than $20 billion was wagered on the NFL through legal sports betting operators. This can be a great league for Arizona sports bettors, especially given the Arizona Cardinals' exciting new partnership with BetMGM AZ. The NFL playoffs and Super Bowl are major betting events and elicit dozens of event-specific promos from legal sportsbooks.

  • NBA

The NBA – with its high-scoring games, frequent comebacks and exciting live betting options – is a fantastic league for sports betting, especially since the Phoenix Suns signed their deal with FanDuel Sportsbook, placing a retail sportsbook in the thick of the action at Footprint Center. Just about every new legal Arizona sports betting site will have plenty of online betting options available to bet on NBA in Arizona, so professional basketball should be a great draw for sports betting online in Arizona.

  • MLB

The MLB is another exciting market with a lot to offer Arizona sports bettors. In a promising deal, the Arizona Diamondbacks, one of the state's most popular professional teams, have signed a partnership agreement with Caesars Sportsbook AZ, one of the nation's biggest sportsbooks. Even if you aren't with Caesars Sportsbook, betting on the MLB in Arizona is an exciting opportunity, especially given how well suited it is to live betting, thanks to its frequent breaks in play. It will be a shock if every Arizona sports betting site does not provide online sports betting on the MLB.

  • NHL

All Arizona sports betting sites offer NHL bets, and the Arizona Coyotes have signed a deal with SaharaBets, an online sportsbook (there's no retail sportsbook location as of May 2022). With its high-octane play, professional hockey can be a great sport to bet, and bettors often might find softer odds on the NHL than other professional leagues because it's not quite as popular.

  • College Sports

In some states, college sports won't be legalized for wagering, but we have good news in Arizona. Betting on NCAA football, basketball and other sports is legal in the state, and most AZ betting operators will offer sports bets on Arizona college sports teams. Because you need to be a professional sports team to be granted a license, NCAA teams can't form the same kinds of licensing partnerships with sportsbooks, but you should have no trouble finding sites that offer bets on college games. And there's more exciting news for Arizona fans of March Madness — in 2024, the semifinals and finals will be held in Glendale.

AZ Sports betting: Which Arizona's Sports Teams Are Bet on The Most?

Betting sites in Arizona will carry all of the pro league games for Arizona's top teams including:

  • Arizona Cardinals

As the state's only NFL franchise, the Arizona Cardinals are hugely popular, and they're sure to be a major player in AZ sports betting in the years to come. The Cardinals have been a fixture of professional sports in Arizona since they moved to the state in 1988, and they've been playing in Glendale since 2006. As of last year, thanks to a licensing partnership, State Farm Stadium stadium is home to a BetMGM retail sportsbook. If the Cards can hold on to rising star quarterback Kyler Murray, they should remain exciting, so bettors should look forward to lots of big games and generous Arizona Cardinals Sportsbook promos for this NFL franchise.

  • Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns are not only Arizona's only NBA team, but they're also one of Arizona's most exciting sports teams right now, having finished the 2021-22 season with the league's best regular-season record. Devin Booker and Chris Paul make the team a force to be reckoned with, and in spite of its Game 7 elimination to the Dallas Mavericks this year, there's certainly a bright future ahead. The Phoenix Suns have a licensing partnership with FanDuel AZ, which operates an online betting site and a retail sportsbook inside Footprint Center.

  • Arizona Diamondbacks

Playing out of Phoenix since 1998, the Arizona Diamondbacks are a fan favorite in Arizona. The D-Backs are the state's only MLB team, and with their World Series win in 2001 — only their fourth season — they hold the record for the fastest to win a World Series in MLB history. The D-Backs have inked an exciting deal with Caesars Sportsbook that has brought a Caesars Sportsbook AZ retail location to Chase Field, and sports betting aficionados and baseball fans alike should look forward to lots of exciting MLB betting opportunities in MLB betting in Arizona.

  • Arizona Coyotes

Unfortunately for Arizona hockey fans, the Coyotes have been an unstable, struggling franchise. After a series of conflicts with the city of Glendale and its Gila River Arena – along with unsuccessful attempts to sell the team and rescue it from bankruptcy – the team has signed a deal to use the Arizona State University's 5,000 seat arena as a temporary home starting next season. Nonetheless, the Arizona Coyotes have signed a licensing deal with SaharaBets Sportsbook AZ, and all Arizona sports betting sites should offer plenty of bets on Coyotes games. So for those diehard Arizona hockey fans, the Coyotes will be available to watch (and bet on) for a few years to come.

  • Phoenix Mercury

Armed with star players such as Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith, the Phoenix Mercury are a standout WNBA franchise with a rich history and bright future. The Mercury will also have plenty to offer the world of AZ sports betting, particularly thanks to their recent licensing partnership with newly legal BallyBet — the latest licensing deal to be struck in the state of Arizona.

  • Arizona Rattlers

An Indoor Football League force, an organization with a three-decade-long track record of success, the Arizona Rattlers are a source of sports pride in the state. The Rattlers had another sparkling record in 2022, led by the desert triplets of quarterback Drew Powell, wide receiver Braxton Haley and running back Shannon Brooks.

Arizona Online Sports Betting: College Sports Teams

The premier Arizona college teams – the Arizona Wildcats and Arizona State Sun Devils – are going to be major players in the world of online sports betting in Arizona. Because legalized sports betting in AZ included college sporting events, all the best Arizona sportsbooks should offer plenty of sports bets and promo offers on Wildcats and Sun Devils games.

  1. Arizona Wildcats

The Wildcats basketball team won the Pac-12 in the 2021-22 season and had a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen.

  2. Arizona State Sun Devils

The Sun Devils, for their part, have nine Division 1 men's teams and 11 D1 women's teams, and are a force on the national stage.

Which Pro Teams have a Partnership with Arizona Online Betting Sites?

According to the Arizona Department of Gaming, to legally offer sports betting online in Arizona, online sportsbooks have to partner with someone with a license – whether one of the 10 licensed tribal casinos, or one of the 10 professional sports franchise granted a license.

When partnering with one of the professional sports teams, sportsbooks typically can offer both retail betting where the team plays, as well as online betting in Arizona.

Here are the sportsbooks that have partnered with a professional sports team in Arizona:

⭐️ BetMGM AZ🏈 Arizona Cardinals
⭐️ Caesars Sportsbook AZ⚾️ Arizona Diamondbacks
⭐️ FanDuel AZ🏀 Phoenix Suns
⭐️ BetRivers AZ🏈 Arizona Rattlers
⭐️ SaharaBets AZ🥅 Arizona Coyotes
⭐️ BallyBet AZ🏀 Phoenix Mercury

Other Teams

Some other professional sports have also made partnerships in Arizona, though they don't have teams. NASCAR has partnered with Barstool Sportsbook, and the PGA TOUR has partnered with DraftKings AZ. Bear in mind that all of these partnerships are signed with different time horizons — some are two years, some are 10 — so look for new and different partnerships in the future.

Other Arizona Online Betting Markets

You're not confined to individual or traditional sporting events if you are in the Grand Canyon State, as there also are two other long-standing wagering options in play, two more that seem ripe for wagering and one video game dynamo that are legal in Arizona.

Arizona Daily Fantasy Sports

Good news for Daily Fantasy Sports fans. Under Arizona sports betting laws, Daily Fantasy Sports is also legal and live in Arizona. FanDuel Sportsbook AZ was one of the first to be licensed in the state, and it also has been granted the right to legally offer Daily Fantasy Sports to Arizona residents. DraftKings – another major Daily Fantasy Sports player – has also been approved to offer sports betting and its extremely popular Daily Fantasy Sports platform.

Horse racing

Betting on horse racing is legal in Arizona, and it's now regulated by the Division of Racing under the Arizona Department of Gaming. Mind you, the regulations are a little strict. You're allowed to bet in-person at racetracks and at certain off-track betting locations, but advance-deposit (a.k.a online) betting is curiously regulated. One sportsbook, TVG, offers betting on horse racing, and its service is limited to desktop computers, so no apps.

We will monitor the Arizona Department of Gaming for changing regulations.

Elections

While the infrastructure isn't quite in place for AZ bettors to bet on elections, politicos should keep an eye out, because Arizona sports betting sites could offer bets on elections in the future. If this goes through, Arizona bettors with an interest in politics will be able to place wagers on the outcomes of state and federal elections, just as they would a sporting event.

Pop Culture Ceremonies

Like betting on electoral outcomes, the time hasn't come just yet for Arizona sports betting sites to offer wagers on pop culture ceremonies. Because there are a lot of moving parts in the industry, you never know. The day could come that Arizona betting laws change to accommodate this kind of wagering.

Arizona Esports

Esports, on the other hand, is a live and legal Arizona sports betting market. Esports is classified the same way as any other professional sport in Arizona, so fans of Esports should be able to choose virtually any sports betting site, such as Unibet AZ, Caesars sportsbook AZ, for example, and find plenty of bets, competitive odds and regular promotions around major Esports tournaments and events. With Esports growing every year, this is definitely an exciting emerging sector in Arizona sports betting.

Arizona Online Sportsbooks: What kind of Wagers are Available?

It's easier to decide that you want to wager than it is to decide the exact bet you want to place. Here are some of the most popular ways to get into the action:

Moneyline

Moneyline bets are the simplest bet that will be offered at Arizona sports betting sites. When you make a moneyline bet in Arizona, you're simply betting on the outcome of a game – either picking the winning team, or a draw. Remember that lines display as a three-digit number along with a plus sign (for the underdog) or a minus sign (for the favorite). If a team is +120, betting $100 returns you $120. Conversely, if a team is -130, you need to bet $130 to win $100.

Parlays

Parlays are a riskier, though potentially lucrative kind of bet, which is essentially one bet made up of multiple individual wagers – either in the same game or across multiple games. In an NBA game, you might make a bet that includes the outcome of the game, a certain player to score more than X points, and another player to grab more than X rebounds.

For the bet to pay off, all individual component bets (usually called "legs") need to win. Because predicting multiple things is difficult, these bets are notoriously hard to win. The payouts will be higher, but they are likely to hit less frequently, so bet carefully.

Totals

Arizona bets on totals, often called over/under bets, are concerned with point totals moreso than final scores or outcomes. This is usually the total points scored in a game by both teams, but it could focus on how many points a given player will score. These bets are especially popular in high-scoring sports such as basketball.

Point Spreads

Point spreads are another extremely popular type of bet that undoubtedly will be extremely popular in Arizona sports betting. This kind of bet applies to the outcome of a game when there is an underdog and a favorite, and is most popular in football. When you're betting on a point spread, each team will display before the game next a plus or minus sign and a decimal number, such as +3.5 (underdog) or -3.5 (favorite).

After the game, that decimal number is either added or subtracted (depending on the sign) from the final score. For example, that means if you bet on the Cardinals to win at +3.5, and they lose 23-20, the bet would still win, because the +3.5 makes the score 23.5-23 in your favor.

Futures

Futures bets are a form of sports betting when the bettor makes a wager on an event that is still pretty far into the future – usually at least a couple of weeks away. These kinds of bets often involve the outcomes of major tournaments or honors awarded at the end of the season.

One common futures bet is to bet the winner of the Super Bowl or World Series at the beginning of the regular season. Because predicting anything so far in the future is challenging, futures often have great odds, but they're extremely difficult to win.

Prop Bets

Prop bets are bets made on events within the game that usually don't affect the final outcome at all, or only indirectly. At major events, there often are many novelty prop bets available – you can famously bet on how long the national anthem will take at the Super Bowl, or who will win the coin toss.

On most games, though, prop bets will include items such as how many free throws an NBA player might make, or how many interceptions an NFL quarterback will throw.

Live Bets

Live bets, also known as in-play bets, are bets made after the game has started. When a sportsbook offers live bets in Arizona, it will offer fluctuating live odds that change in response to game events.

If a team falls behind its odds will go up, because it will be less likely to win. If a team gets a big lead, its odds will go down. This can be a super exciting way to incorporate betting into the experience of watching professional sports.

Prohibited Bets

In Arizona, as in just about any jurisdiction that has chosen to legalize sports betting, there are a couple of prohibited bets. For instance, Arizona bettors are not allowed to place prop bets on college athletics because the players are not professionals and there are concerns that the possibility of betting on their individual performances could risk influencing their actions in-game. Moreover, betting on high school athletics is fully prohibited.

What Should I Look For When Deciding Which Arizona Betting Site is Right for me?

There are a lot of things to keep in mind when choosing the best Arizona online sportsbook. No two AZ sports betting sites are going to be exactly alike. The user interfaces will be different, the types of bets they offer might vary and the promos and odds could also be unique.

Because of the variance between sportsbooks in Arizona, it's a good idea for those interested in Arizona sports betting to keep a combination of factors in mind when choosing an online sports betting account. Here are some of the major points we think you should take into account when getting started sports betting in AZ.

  • Reviews

When a sports betting site is truly providing its bettors with outstanding service, it is bound to get lots great reviews as users recommend the site to others. Here, we run reviews of every new legal sportsbook licensed in the Arizona market, so be sure to browse our reviews of all sites you're considering. Chances are, if it's one of the Arizona sports betting sites worth joining, we'll have lots of good things to say about it, based jointly on user feedback and our own expert analysis.

  • Bets Allowed

As we've covered in the section on available wagers, there are a lot of ways users can bet in Arizona. Though everyone has a favorite type of bet, there's a time and a place for each, so it's a good idea to choose a betting site with lots of different bets available. This also applies to the markets (i.e. sports and leagues) each Arizona online sportsbook offers. You want to make sure you have a good variety of bet types and markets available, so you don't end up feeling limited by the sports betting site.

  • Odds Pricing

Each operator sets its own odds, so sports betting sites in Arizona often have unique lines and odds on a given game. Sportsbooks do this by examining a combination of mathematical models, historical data and expert analysis to determine the implied probability of a given outcome. Then they set a line that corresponds to that probability, before padding the odds in their favor to make sure that the house makes money either way. This last step is called adding "juice" or "vig," and different sportsbooks will add different amounts. The less vig a sportsbook adds, the better deal its bets are. So it's a good idea to pay attention to the lines and how they stack up across competing sportsbooks to make sure you're getting the best available pricing on your bets. It's even a good idea to have multiple accounts with different sportsbooks, so you can take advantage of a good line when one shows up at a given sportsbook. Luckily for you, we vet sportsbooks and frequently review how competitive their odds are, so it's a great idea to stay up to date with our reviews and stay informed on who's offering the best-priced odds and lines in Arizona sports betting.

  • Sports Betting Promos

With AZ sports betting sites pouring millions into promotions and bonuses to attract customers, there's no reason to bet with a sportsbook that isn't offering you regular bonuses and promotions. Users should usually be able to benefit from a strong bonus at the time of signing up – such as a deposit match or risk-free bet (often up to $1,000 in value) – along with regular offers of boosted odds, bet insurance or other special promos. Every AZ sportsbook we review will offer some kind of promotion, bonus or a risk-free bet. Often, we will make sure to point you in the direction of the best welcome bonus, so that you can take advantage of some really advantageous offers, such as the highest-value deposit matches, no-deposit free bets or the highest-value first risk-free bet.

  • User Interface

Whether you're betting in-browser on a desktop computer or mobile sports betting from an app on your phone, you're going to want to use a sportsbook with an excellent user interface. Excellence in user interface means fast speeds for depositing and making wagers, quick updates on scores and live odds, an intuitive layout that is easy to understand and a visually appealing set-up that displays nicely no matter what kind of device you're using. All our reviews will discuss a sports betting site or app layout, its speeds and its overall quality interface. If you're going to bet regularly, you want to be able to place your wager easily, quickly and without any technical difficulties or issues. Most of all, you don't want to be stuck with a sportsbook that you don't personally enjoy the experience of using.

  • Deposits And Withdrawals

When we rank and rate sports betting sites and apps, a major factor we take into account is the ease with which users are able to make deposits and withdrawals. You never want to be in a situation where you can't deposit in time to place a wager, or worse, you can't get your money out of your sportsbook when you want to. Easy deposits and withdrawals have to do with both speed and options. On one hand, you want as few processing delays as possible when depositing and withdrawing. Some sports betting operators will take up to a week, and occasionally longer, to process deposits and withdrawals, so look out for that in our reviews. Another major factor to take into account is the variety of options available for depositing and withdrawing. Typically, users will be able to use credit card payments, and (depending on your bank's rules) online banking. Other online wallets can sometimes be used, depending on the jurisdiction, but be sure to check that before you sign up. Regardless of what banking method you use, it's a good idea to sign up with a sportsbook that has a lot of available avenues for depositing and withdrawing.

  • Customer Support

In case of an unexpected error or issue, you're going to want to use a sportsbook with a robust customer support program. Every sportsbook we review is going to have some form of customer support, but the type and quality of support offered can vary. If you're going to be putting hard-earned money into a sports betting site, it's important that you feel secure in that transaction. In simple terms, you want to sign up with a sportsbook you can trust. In our ratings, we value having a variety of options for customer support. Having an email option, a phone option and a 24-hour live chat are all beneficial, so look for those details in our reviews of Arizona online sportsbooks.

Why Should I Have At Least 3 Arizona Sportsbook Accounts?

Choosing a sportsbook can be tricky. With so many options out there, and with all of them competing for your business, determining which one is actually the best can seem impossible. A lot of the time you might be better signing up with multiple sportsbooks, not just one. Sports betting is a new market, so multiple Arizona online betting sites are rushing in and offering promos and bonuses to try to stake their claim and build a customer base in the state.

With so many promos and incentives being given, there's no reason you shouldn't take multiple offers, making accounts with different sportsbooks. Here are a few reasons it might be a good idea to sign up for multiple online betting sites AZ.

  • Get The Best Line

Because sportsbooks have in-house oddsmakers who determine their lines and odds, on any given bet each sportsbook could have a different line available. The same bet that's +110 at one sportsbook might be +120 at another. If you have accounts with a few sportsbooks, you can shop around and compare the lines that are being offered on a bet you want to make. Remember that when you get better odds, you're essentially getting a better price on your bet because the house is taking a smaller cut. The more accounts you have with different sportsbooks, the likelier it is you'll find the best line.

  • Introductory Betting Bonuses

Sports betting in Arizona is a brand new legal market, which means it's the most exciting time to be a sports bettor. Sportsbooks are a lot like credit cards insofar as they love to offer major welcome bonuses and promotions to get you to sign up, and this is especially true in new markets. Welcome bonuses such as a risk-free bet, a deposit match or a big free bet can total $1,000 or more. If you sign up for multiple sportsbooks, you might be able to secure multiple $1,000 risk-free bet (or other) promotions. Bear in mind that risk-free bets are not the same free bets – a risk-free bet requires a real money wager, so you'll be refunded in bet credits the real money that you actually bet. Nonetheless, the more accounts you have, the more of these lucrative deposit match or risk-free bet promotions you'll be able to claim.

  • Bet Offerings

Finding better lines and odds isn't always easy. Some sportsbooks use the same software as each other to set their lines, which means they often have the same offerings on props, futures and other bets. This isn't a bad thing necessarily, but as we've established it's a good idea to make sure you're getting the best possible line. Signing up for multiple sportsbooks can help you make sure that you get a variety of bet offerings, and stop you from getting stuck with sportsbooks that are offering the same things.

  • Feel The Sportsbook

Though you might already have a sportsbook in mind that you want to use, it's still a good idea to test drive a few of them. At the end of the day, a big part of picking a sports betting site is subjective – it's going to depend on how you like its interface, the layout, the look of the site and whether the kinds of special offers you're getting are the ones you want. By testing out a handful of sportsbooks, you can be sure that the one you end up betting with most is actually the one you like best. Meanwhile, if there's one with a clunky feel, you can use it less – maybe only when it's offering a particularly juicy line, for example. Always remember that no two sportsbooks are alike, and no two bettors are alike, so it's important to make sure you get a feel for different sportsbooks before settling on one.

  • Sportsbook Rules

Every sportsbook will have a different set of rules that govern how you can bet, and how your bets are paid out. These are often little things that you might not even notice, but they can be meaningful when they become relevant. For example, if a baseball game is rained out, DraftKings will void your bet, unless the game is rescheduled and completed within 36 hours of the original start time. On the other hand, if you're with BetMGM, your bet is official after 5 innings of play; if the home team is leading, it's official after 4.5 innings. Another example is how DraftKings will refund a first touchdown scorer NFL prop bet if no touchdowns are scored, but Bet365 will not — because it has an option to bet that no touchdowns will be scored. These things might seem small, but they are important details to know so that you are not surprised when they make the difference between a payout and a loss. If you have multiple accounts, you can be sure to choose the one with the most favorable set of rules for a given bet.

What Arizona Online Sports Betting Deposit And Withdraw Options Are Available?

In Arizona, when you're betting with a regulated operator that's affiliated with either a professional sports franchise or one of the state's licensed tribal casinos, you should have easy access to secure, reliable payment methods for depositing and withdrawing. You should be able to pay online with your credit cards, use online banking (bank rules permitting) and even an online wallet.

You also should be able to deposit in-person at any retail sports betting outfit, meaning you should have plenty of options. Given the extensive regulatory framework in place, you should also be able to bet safely and securely, with no doubts about where your money is going. What Makes Arizona Online Sports Betting Different From Other Markets?

When comparing Arizona to other states, Arizona sports betting has been set up quickly and impressively, and the market is in an advanced stage of development. Arizona Bettors have great access to almost all major sportsbooks (and some local ones) and signing up is easy whether in person or online.

AZ sportsbooks tend to offer a mobile app available both for iOS and Android. The market is a little more tightly regulated than in some other states, because of Arizona's strict licensing program (only 20 licenses granted in total) so not every sportsbook will be able to enter the market, but Arizona bettors still should have a broad choice of legal operators and a compelling set of promotional offers headed their way.

Retail Sports Betting Vs. Arizona Online Sports Betting

Because almost all Arizona sports betting operators offer in-person and online options, it can be useful to think through the difference between retail sports betting and AZ online sports betting. Retail betting is taxed at a lower rate (8% in AZ) and can be a fun way to spice up the experience of going to a sporting event, but if you're not already planning on being there, it might be inconvenient to travel to a brick and mortar sportsbook.

Online betting tends to be more convenient and easier, because you can do it more or less instantly and on-demand. On the other hand, Arizona online betting is taxed at a higher rate (10%) than retail betting. In general, online and in-app betting will be the average bettor's go-to method, whereas retail betting will offer a good option when it happens to be convenient.

Who Legalizes Sports Betting Sites in Arizona?

After Gov. Doug Ducey signed the bill legalizing sports betting in Arizona, sports gambling needed only to have appropriate regulations set up. The Arizona Department of Gaming is in charge of sports betting legislation.

The Arizona Department of Gaming:

  • devises the licensing system and grants the 20 licenses to the professional franchises and tribal casinos;
  • collects fees on the licenses (initially $750,000 plus a $100,000 application fee, and $150,000 from then on);
  • collects appropriate taxes on sports betting activity (10% on online wagering, 8% on retail wagering);
  • oversees the activities of casinos, lotteries, sportsbooks and other gambling in the state.

As you can see, the Arizona Department of Gaming has had a prominent role before and after every sports bet.

How Much Arizona Sports Betting Revenue Is Generated Each Month?

The legalization of sports betting in Arizona stands to pump a lot of money into the state treasury. The state is able to levy a tax on around 40% of the gross earnings made in the state – so in the the first six months of legal gambling in Arizona, the state made just under $8 million in taxes, and this number is expected to grow as legal gambling gets more popular.

Because gambling revenues are taxable, once translated into public funds, the government can fund anything from education to infrastructure projects for Arizona residents. This is a major incentive for states to legalize sports betting.

Arizona Sports Betting Tax Rate

The tax rate on sports betting in Arizona varies depending on the kind of bet. Retail betting, such in-arena betting with one of the commercial sportsbooks, or other bets on horse racing, is taxed at 8% of the wager. On the other hand, Arizona sports betting law dictates that online and mobile wagers are taxed at 10%.

This rate is fairly standard and more or less matches up with states such as Ohio and Colorado. There are of course outliers. Some states like New York tax much more aggressively than Arizona, while Nevada, Iowa and others tax gambling at a slightly lower rate.

Responsible Arizona Sports Betting

Gambling is addictive, and it's important to be safe when playing. Always remember that nothing is ever guaranteed, and that there's no such thing as a truly risk-free bet (when sportsbooks promise a "risk-free bet" they're promising to refund a real money wager in bet credits – it's a good deal, but not a completely "risk-free" bet). Never bet more than you're willing to lose, and if you need to, use your sportsbook's responsible gambling features to set limits on how much you deposit, lose, or how much time you spend on your sportsbook.

If you or someone you know needs immediate help, visit problemgambling.az.gov, call (800) 639-8783 or text NEXT-STEP to 53342.
