Is It Legal to Bet on the NFL Online?

Yes, betting on the NFL online is legal in Arizona, as well as in 38 other states and Washington D.C. Most mobile sportsbooks allow you to place NFL bets via desktop or mobile devices using a sports betting app. To follow state rules, these apps use location services to make sure you’re betting from a state where mobile sports betting is allowed, and remember, you have to be 21 or older to play. In addition to online options, Arizona also offers retail sportsbooks where you can place bets in person.

NFL Betting in Arizona

Sports betting became legal in Arizona in September 2021, officially going live in September of 2021. Since then, 14 sportsbooks have launched across the state. With more options still popping up, Arizona quickly became a top player in sports betting. In 2022, the state ranked 10th in the nation for betting handle, with just under $10 billion wagered. The NFL season is a huge driver of action in the state. During the kickoff month of September 2024, Arizona’s betting handle jumped 47.3% from August, and revenue more than doubled.

Popular NFL Events To Bet On

Arizona NFL betting apps offer odds on every game throughout the season, but they also provide plenty of ways to bet on popular NFL events, giving fans a wide variety of options, even through the postseason. In fact, during the 2024 playoffs in January, Arizona’s monthly sports betting revenue set a record at $70.9 million.

NFL Playoffs

Most major NFL betting apps include several markets for wagering on the playoffs. A common option is betting on whether a team will make the playoffs, with “Yes” or “No” odds available for every NFL team. This falls under team futures bets and is offered across most sportsbooks.

You can also bet on who will win each NFL division in the AFC and NFC. Since division winners earn automatic playoff spots, these bets are another way to predict postseason teams. For example, you can wager directly on the Cardinals' playoff chances or any other NFL squad to make the playoffs. Sportsbooks offer more ways to bet on the playoffs, including odds on which team will win the AFC and NFC Conference Championships.

Beyond just making the playoffs, some betting sites let you bet on the exact stage each team will be eliminated. Options include missing the playoffs, losing in the Wild Card Round, Divisional Round, Conference Championship Game, the Super Bowl, or winning the Super Bowl outright.

Super Bowl

The most common Super Bowl bet is simple: pick the team you think will win it all. These odds, available year-round unless a team is eliminated, are a type of NFL futures bet and give insight into how oddsmakers view each team heading into the season. You can always check the latest Cardinals Super Bowl odds to see where they stand.

Another popular option is betting on which two teams will face off in the Super Bowl, essentially picking the AFC and NFC champions. For an even more specific challenge, some sportsbooks let you wager on the exact Super Bowl outcome, requiring you to correctly predict both the winner and the runner-up.

Other types of bets are also available during the Super Bowl, including a wide range of popular prop bets. Super Bowl prop bets go far beyond what you’ll find during a regular NFL game. In addition to standard player props, sportsbooks often offer novelty bets like the color of the Gatorade poured on the winning coach, the length of the national anthem, surprise halftime performer guests, and more.

MVP

Most NFL betting apps offer odds on who will win the NFL MVP, with lines shifting throughout the season based on individual and team performance. The award usually goes to a quarterback, but players at other positions can win. The last non-QB to take home MVP was running back Adrian Peterson in 2012, after rushing for 2,097 yards, just eight yards shy of the NFL’s single-season record.

While the MVP is the most popular NFL award to bet on, sportsbooks also offer odds on several other season-long honors.

Offensive/Defensive Rookie of the Year

Most NFL betting apps offer odds on who will win the Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Offensive award has recently gone to quarterbacks, with C.J. Stroud (Texans) and Jayden Daniels (Commanders) winning in 2023 and 2024, respectively. On the defensive side, pass rushers have dominated—Will Anderson Jr. (Texans) took the honor in 2023, followed by Jared Verse (Rams) in 2024.

You can also find odds on other season-long awards, including Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and more, depending on the sportsbook.

NFC/AFC Divisions

The best NFL betting sites offer odds on which team will win each of the league’s eight divisions, North, South, East, and West, in each of the AFC and NFC. Division winner bets are a popular form of NFL futures, and they can offer solid value if you time your wager right. Winning a division not only guarantees a playoff spot but also secures home-field advantage in the Wild-Card Round.

The Arizona Cardinals compete in the NFC West, a division that also includes the 49ers, Rams, and Seahawks. Arizona hasn’t won the division since 2015, but fans and bettors alike will be watching closely to see if they can turn things around this season.

Choosing an NFL Betting App

Picking the best NFL betting app can be subjective, but there are key things to look for to find the right one for you. With so many sports betting apps available, picking the right NFL app takes some research. Consider the site’s trustworthiness, user experience, and what other bettors are saying. Plus, using promos and bonuses can give you the most bang for your buck and boost your betting power. Together, these factors make a big difference in how enjoyable and reliable your betting experience will be.

  • Types of Bets Offered When researching NFL betting apps, one key thing to keep in mind is the variety of bets they offer, because not every sportsbook covers the same odds or markets. On top of that, what you can bet on often depends on your state’s laws and which betting markets are legal where you live. So, it pays to do a little homework to find the app that matches your betting style and offers the best options for you.
  • Odds and Betting Lines for NFL Games The best NFL betting sites offer timely, sharp odds and lines for upcoming games, including key matchups like Monday Night Football and Thursday Night Football. Most major sportsbooks post lines for the entire week’s slate by Sunday evening, giving bettors plenty of time to shop for the best odds. These lines often shift throughout the week based on how bets come in, especially for high-profile games like MNF and TNF that draw extra attention.
  • NFL Betting Bonuses When choosing an NFL betting app, don’t just look at the welcome bonuses. Pay attention to ongoing promotions and bonuses for current customers, too. The best NFL sportsbooks keep bettors engaged with incentives like “odds specials,” where they temporarily boost the odds on certain wagers to increase potential payouts. Many also offer rewards programs that give frequent bettors perks and bonuses, making it worth sticking around.
  • User Experience The best NFL betting sites focus on giving users a positive experience, starting with an easy-to-use interface. That means being able to place bets easily from your mobile device, whether through a mobile browser or a dedicated betting app. To get a sense of how well a sportsbook performs, it’s helpful to check out user reviews and app ratings, especially when you’re browsing on your phone.
  • Deposits and Withdrawals The best NFL betting sites make depositing and withdrawing money quick, easy, and secure. When picking a sportsbook, think about how you can pay, whether that’s straight from your bank, using a debit card, or a service like PayPal. Also, check the minimum and maximum deposit limits, how fast you’ll get your winnings, and if there’s a minimum amount you need to cash out.
  • Customer Service While NFL betting sites usually handle bets quickly and accurately, you might still need help with your account at some point. It’s a good idea to check user reviews to see how their customer service stacks up, especially how easy it is to get in touch, and how fast and helpful they are when you have a question or issue.

Mobile NFL Sports Betting Apps

When choosing a mobile NFL sports betting app, it’s smart to check the ratings in the Google Play or Apple App Store. User reviews give you a good sense of what the average bettor experiences. Take a look at the overall rating and read through comments to see what users like, and watch for any common complaints, before you decide to jump in.

📲 BetMGM Sportsbook App Ratings4.8 (Apple), 4.2 (Google Play)
📲 Caesars Sportsbook App Rating4.7 (Apple), 4.5 (Google Play)
📲 DraftKings Sportsbook App Rating4.8 (Apple), 4.3 (Google Play)
📲 bet365 Sportsbook App Rating4.8 (Apple), 4.5 (Google Play)

It's worth noting that sportsbooks use your location information to confirm that you are located in Arizona or a state where mobile sports betting is legal before you can place your wagers. Sportsbooks are required to collect this information for regulatory purposes, including verifying your identity and confirming you are of legal betting age. Operators require your Social Security number for tax documentation on any winnings. Don't worry, though; mobile sportsbooks encrypt this information to ensure your privacy.

How do NFL odds work?

NFL odds indicate how much profit a bettor will win if their wager were to cash. The team favored to win a game is indicated with a minus sign (-), where the number that follows indicates how much money a bettor would have to wager to win $100 in profit.

The underdog of a given matchup is indicated with a plus sign (+), where the number that follows indicates how much profit a bettor would win with a $100 wager.

NFL Moneyline Betting

NFL moneyline betting is one of the simplest concepts for new sports bettors, despite its fancy name. A moneyline bet is simply a wager on which team will win the game, regardless of the margin of victory or how many points are scored. The team favored to win is indicated with a minus sign, and the underdog is indicated with a plus sign. Odds continue to fluctuate throughout the week leading up to the matchup based on team news, as well as betting trends from those who have already wagered on the game.

NFL Spread Betting

NFL spread betting is one of the most common types of NFL wagers. Oddsmakers set the point spread to "even the odds" between two unevenly matched teams by projecting the margin of victory. When looking at the point spread, the team favored to win has a minus sign, while the underdog has a plus sign. The goal is to project which team will win and by how much. Winning an NFL point spread bet is also known as "covering the spread."

To "cover the spread" when betting on an odds favorite, for example, Falcons -2, Atlanta would need to win the matchup in question by three or more points. If the Falcons won the matchup by exactly two points, this would be considered a push, AKA, a tie, and the original wager would be returned.

The underdog can "cover the spread" in one of two ways. If wagering on the Buccaneers +2, the Buccaneers would "cover the spread" either by 1) Winning the game outright, or 2) Losing by fewer than two points. If the Buccaneers lost by exactly two points, this would be considered a push, and your original wager would be returned.

Sometimes, sportsbooks will tack on 0.5 points to the point spread, which is known as the "hook." This eliminates the chance of a tie, known in sports betting as a "push," where the wager is essentially canceled out and returned to the bettor. To cover the spread with a hook, for example, Falcons -2.5, Atlanta would have to win the matchup by 2 or more points. The underdog, for example, the Buccaneers +2.5, would either have to win the game outright or lose by two or fewer points.

NFL Over/Under Betting

NFL over/under betting, sometimes referred to as "betting the point total," is a wager placed on the total number of points both teams will combine for in a given matchup. Point totals are available for all NFL games throughout the season with the major sportsbooks, challenging sports bettors to project whether the two teams will combine for more or fewer points than the number installed by oddsmakers. Odds for the point total are typically installed at -110, meaning it would take a $110 wager on the correct outcome to win $100 profit.

Many things can influence a given matchup's projected point total, including (but not limited to) how well a team's offense and defense have performed in recent matchups, as well as weather and field conditions, and injuries to key players.

NFL Parlay Betting

NFL parlay betting refers to the act of combining two or more bets (known as legs) into one, giving bettors the ability to make multiple predictions within the same bet. To win an NFL parlay bet, each of the individual outcomes must be predicted correctly. That means if even just one of the legs does not cash, the parlay loses, and no profits are won.

The upside of NFL parlay betting is the ability to make more profit. The odds for a parlay are increased when compared to the odds for each bet, accounting for the lower likelihood that a bettor will correctly predict each outcome. Though NFL parlay betting can be a fun way to enjoy NFL action, parlays are inherently risky, given the need to predict each outcome correctly.

NFL Player Props

NFL player props are wagers placed on a given player's performance in a given statistical category. For quarterbacks, the most commonly available NFL player props include passing yard totals, passing touchdown totals, and whether or not they will throw an interception. For running backs, commonly available NFL player props include rushing and receiving yard totals, as well as anytime touchdown scorer bets. For wide receivers and tight ends, commonly available player props include receiving yard totals and anytime touchdown scorer bets.

NFL Team Props

NFL team props are wagers on a specific team's performance that are not tied to the win or loss outcome of a specific game. NFL Team Prop Bets include wagers like how many total touchdowns a team will score or how many games a given team's longest regular season winning streak will last.

NFL Futures

NFL futures bets are wagers on outcomes that will be decided later in the NFL season or after the season ends. These wagers include bets on outcomes such as which team will win Super Bowl 60 or which team will win a certain division or conference. Betting odds for some of these NFL futures markets remain live throughout the season, though odds will continually fluctuate based on team performance and news.
