What Does the Phoenix Suns' Starting 5 Lineup Look Like?
When the roster was healthy, the lineup listed below is who started for the Suns, which is one of the oldest teams in the NBA. Guard Grayson Allen served as the team's sixth man, along with forward Ryan Dunn and center Mason Plumlee, mixed in.
Position | Starter |
Point Guard: | Devin Booker |
Shooting Guard: | Bradley Beal |
Small Forward: | Ryan Dunn |
Power Forward: | Kevin Durant |
Center: | Nick Richards |
Point Guard Devin Booker
Booker bounced back and forth between point guard and shooting guard. A four-time NBA All-Star and 2022 All-NBA First Teamer, Booker is a shooter whose range can extend out to the 3-point line. After ten seasons, Booker became the franchise's all-time leading scorer in February. Book has spent his entire NBA career in Phoenix. Booker is the face of the team and entering his 11th season, so we expect the Suns to restructure their roster and build around Book.
Shooting Guard Bradley Beal
Bradley Beal also alternated between point guard and shooting guard. Beal suffered from injuries throughout the season, limiting him to just 38 starts and 53 appearances. The three-time All-Star's contract is a tricky one with a no-trade clause, so we expect the Suns to either buy out his contract or trade him this offseason. Either way, we assume Beal's time in Phoenix is done.
Small Forward Ryan Dunn
Ryan Dunn started 48 games this season and was a key player of the Suns' offense. The rookie brought impactful plays and an explosive defense to the roster. One of Dunn's best moments this season was when he dunked on Giannis Antetokounmpo in Phoenix's 108-106 win over the Bucks in March and was just one rebound shy of a double-double. We expect Dunn to have a long-term role on the Suns.
Power Forward Kevin Durant
One of the most talented players in the entire NBA, Durant led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA Finals and went on to win consecutive NBA Finals MVP awards in 2017 and 2018 with the Golden State Warriors. He was traded to Phoenix from Brooklyn at midseason in 2022-23 and averaged 26.6 points per game this season. Durant is a perennial top choice for NBA MVP on sportsbooks in Arizona. But injuries sidelined Durant for 20 games this season. It would be no surprise if Durant is involved in a blockbuster trade this offseason.
Center Nick Richards
Acquired from the Charlotte Hornets on January 15, the Suns got a center who could contribute immediately to help their playoff chances. Richards had a double-double in his first game with the Suns, scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds in a 125-121 win over the Detroit Pistons. He became the first person in Suns' history to record a double-double off the bench. Since Richards joined the Suns in January, we expect him to return to the starting lineup next season.
Examining the Phoenix Suns’ 2024-25 Bench
When the team is healthy, the Suns' bench looks like this:
Position | 2nd | 3rd | 4th |
Point Guard: | Tyus Jones | Collin Gillespie | Ty Ty Washington Jr. |
Shooting Guard: | Collin Gillespie | Grayson Allen | Devin Booker |
Small Forward: | Grayson Allen | Cody Martin | Royce O'Neale |
Power Forward: | Royce O'Neale | Bol Bol | Ryan Dunn |
Center: | Oso Ighodaro | Mason Plumlee | Kevin Durant |
The Suns dealt with several injuries throughout the season, impacting the starting 5 and bench. Phoenix had the second-most expensive roster in NBA history, but it didn't help them as they ended the season below .500 and without a playoff berth.
Who Is the Phoenix Suns’ 6th Man?
Grayson Allen has been in the NBA since 2018, when he was drafted by the Utah Jazz. The Milwaukee Bucks traded Allen to the Suns in September 2023. Allen is a key player on both ends of the court. One of Allen's greatest strengths is his shooting beyond the arc, which has come in handy late in the game. The Suns got a victory against the Jazz in February thanks to Allen's buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Allen will be back as he signed a four-year contract extension in April of 2024.
