Where Will ASU Football Go in Year 1 of Dillingham Era?

Where Will ASU Football Go in Year 1 of Dillingham Era?
Fact Checked by Michael Peters

There’s a new figure on the sidelines in Tempe, and he’s about as much of a departure from his predecessor as possible.

Replacing 69-year-old football lifer Herm Edwards at Arizona State is a 33-year-old who began his coaching career at Scottsdale’s Chaparral High School.

Valley native Kenny Dillingham takes over for Edwards, who bottomed out in 2022, going 3-9 and leading the Sun Devils to their worst year-end win total since 3-8 in 1994.

Fast forward 29 years from that ‘90s low water mark, and you’ll see an ASU program among the longest of long shots to win the Pac-12 in 2023.

Caesars Sportsbook Arizona lists the Sun Devils at +15000 to win the conference, ahead of Stanford’s +30000. It lists the Sun Devils with a preseason win total over/under at 4.5, with the over at -125 and the under at -105.

The new era begins with a home game at Sun Devil Stadium against Southern Utah at 7 p.m. on Aug. 31.

ASU Likely To Go Through Growing Pains

With a grueling gauntlet of a schedule that includes home non-conference games against Oklahoma State (on Sept. 9) and Fresno State (on Sept. 16) and a host of difficult conference contests, there’s no shortage of games to use Arizona sportsbook promos to bet on.

Chief among them are ASU’s Pac-12 opener against USC in Tempe on Sept. 30, along with their home game against Deion Sanders and Colorado on Oct. 7.

The main road games to keep an eye on for the Sun Devils in 2023 are their clashes against Washington (on Oct. 21), Utah (on Nov. 4) and UCLA (on Nov. 11), putting a youthful ASU squad to the test.

Those games are among the reasons why we give the Sun Devils the best odds of going 4-8 (+275) or 5-7 (+300) in 2023, compared with 6-6 (+450) or 7-5 (+650).

One way or another, Dillingham and his players will have to turn a corner as a program, beginning against Southern Utah.
