Suns Just Miss Being No. 1

Phoenix has averaged 122.3 points, so it falls just behind the Nuggets on this chart. The Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks also are 3-0 on or near St. Patrick’s Day in the past three years.

This year, the Suns will be lucky to have survived a tough stretch that ends on St. Patrick’s Day still among the top eight teams in the Western Conference. On March 17, Phoenix wraps up a four-game road trip that includes games against the Eastern Conference’s top three teams.

The trip starts Monday at Cleveland, No. 2 in the East. It continues Thursday at the NBA-leading Boston Celtics, which just beat the Suns 117-110 on Saturday in Phoenix. There’s a bit of a breather with a Friday game at Charlotte (16-48 as of March 10), but it’s still the second half of a back-to-back.

And then the Suns close the stretch with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee on St. Patrick’s Day. Phoenix currently has the fifth-best odds to win the NBA Finals at +1600, according to bet365 Arizona. If the Suns can win a couple of games against the best in East, they likely improve those odds.

As for the past three years, Phoenix beat Orlando 116-113 on March 16, 2023; won at Houston 129-112 on March 16, 2022; and knocked off Memphis 122-99 on March 15, 2021.

That 2021 victory gave the Suns a 26-12 record en route to a 51-win season despite only playing 63 games the year after the COVID-19 pandemic. That Phoenix team won playoff series against the Lakers, Nuggets and Clippers before falling in the NBA Finals to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games.

Just three seasons later, guard Devin Booker is the only player left in Phoenix from that Finals team. Now, he’s teamed with Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal and Grayson Allen and the Suns are still trying to find their chemistry as they prepare for the playoffs.

If they can find a bit of luck on this tough road trip that ends on St. Patrick’s Day, it might just be worth finding Arizona betting promos in time for the NBA Playoffs.
