Arizona Clinches National Sports Betting Revenue Record In September

Arizona Clinches National Sports Betting Revenue Record In September
Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

Operators across America just capped off the largest single-month revenue total in American sports betting history, as Arizona sportsbooks clinched a milestone month when they reported on Friday.

September’s nationwide revenue total of $1,374,605,330 knocked off the previous U.S. record of $1,310,946,263, set in January 2024.

Thanks in large part to 13 states and Washington D.C. that set new revenue records, the ninth month of the calendar year topped January’s historic performance, speaking to the betting volume that comes from the opening month of the professional football season in the Lower 48.

Massive Revenue in Arizona And Elsewhere

Throw in New York and Arizona – states that failed to break their all-time revenue records but still posted whopping totals of $206 million and $39.697 million, respectively – and you have a good viewpoint into how the American wagering scene got where it did in September.

Of the states that set records for revenue in September, the locale with the highest total was Nevada, where operators raked in $80.856 million despite the presence of Arizona sports betting apps next door. The Silver State beat out places like Massachusetts ($73.488 million), Maryland ($62.530 million) and Colorado ($41.571 million) when it came to wagering revenue nationally.

Other record-breaking states were Illinois ($38.752 million), Iowa ($27.46 million), Connecticut ($22.346 million), Oregon ($11.423 million), Tennessee ($9.612 million), Maine ($6.672 million), Wyoming ($2.953 million), Nebraska ($698K) and South Dakota ($216K). Washington D.C. ($8.188 million) joined the club as well.

Sixth-Best Total Ever For Arizona

Arizona’s total of $39.607 million represented the sixth-highest total in the Grand Canyon State’s 36-month reporting history since operators with Arizona sports betting promos launched in September 2021. That speaks to the lofty results across the country, even in markets where records managed to stay in place during September.

In total, September’s wagering revenue total of $1,374,605,330 represented the fourth time in 2024 that states have cleared the $1 billion mark in that category, joining January, April and May.

With the heart of NFL and college football season ahead of us, plus NBA and college basketball heating up, there’s reason to believe that the industry’s best days are right ahead. September’s historic revenue figures potentially serve as the first course in a fall full of history for American sports betting. For instance, several states have already set records for handle (wagers accepted) in October, including New York’s $2.33 billion. That part of the national record book might be rewritten even before Arizona reports its October numbers, which will be some time around Christmas.
